There is no obligation for a local chapter to be involved in the planning or implementation of a CE program, but if you decide to pursue a CE activity, please note that it must be accredited by the NKF CE office.
Accrediting Your Program with the NKF
We recommend that you begin planning your program 90+ days before your event to meet the CE timeline. Activity planning forms must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the event.
All other groups should contact the NKF CE office at cmeinfo@kidney.org for more information on accrediting local activities.
General CE Accreditation Information
In support of improving patient care, the National Kidney Foundation is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Local Chapters are required to:
- Adhere to NKF’s CME/CE process and policies for all educational activities.
- Partner with your local NKF office staff if funding is being sought through a commercial interest, vendors and exhibitors, or sponsors.
- Submit a completed accreditation application packet to the NKF CE staff. This packet must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the event.
- All promotional materials must be approved by NKF headquarters prior to distribution.
- Per the NKF Conflict of Interest Policy, all individuals who participate in an NKF activity must complete required Disclosure documentation. This information is kept confidential and on file at NKF headquarters.
- Faculty and Planners cannot be employed by a commercial interest, such as pharmaceutical or device companies. This includes Fresenius as well. If you choose to include a commercial faculty, we cannot accredit the program. If the chapter professionals are employed by an ineligible company, they may remain in their positions on the committee or as chairs and recruit a sub-committee of eligible professionals to develop any CE program they intend to deliver.
- Send 2-3 reminders to learners to complete their evaluation summary within 90 days of the event.
Tips for Planning CE Activities:
- Ensure you have a strong planning committee in place that can serve as a liaison between you and your faculty. Planning committee members should be representative of the target audience and/or type of accreditation being sought.
- Content should be unbiased and free of product placement and company logos. Speaker bureau presentations are also prohibited.
- Faculty should be selected based on expertise in topic/content.
- We encourage you to educate on topics that are unique to your local communities' needs, and relate those topics to themes such as diversity, health equity, and inclusion.
- Maintain appropriate receipts for reconciliation of funds and documentation of all content-related correspondence between your planning committee and faculty.
- Maintain constant communication with your faculty, planning committee, and NKF headquarters throughout the process.
