Investing In Research Opportunities

NKF introduces the Health Equity Community Engagement Award to fund projects that improve access to kidney care, kidney disease management, and patient outcomes.

Earlier this year, healthcare professionals were invited to submit proposals to influence health equity related to kidney health at a community level. The goal of these projects is to prevent, reduce, and eliminate kidney health disparities and advancing health equity in local communities or populations at risk for and overburdened with kidney disease. 

The following two recipients will receive $75,000 of funding for one year of research

Connecting the Dots: Evaluating the Impact of Digital Stories on Increasing African Americans’ Kidney Prevention Knowledge and Actions 
LaShara Davis, PhD, Houston Methodist Hospital

This study will utilize digital storytelling to design health messages about kidney disease that better connect with African American/Black patients, increase awareness of the relationship between kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes, and motivate actions to monitor their kidney function. 

Caridad AwaReness and Education (CARE): a community engagement initiative to address gaps in education among Latine adults with or at-risk for kidney disease 
Janet Diaz Martinez, PhD,RD,LDN, Caridad Clinic and Florida International University

A community-based participatory research approach to address gaps in kidney disease education by co-creating innovative culturally and linguistically appropriate CKD patient education materials.
