This toolkit includes everything you need to advocate for the kidney community on social media.
Join the #MyKidneyVoice conversation and help your friends, family, and followers understand the importance of addressing the challenges of kidney disease and promoting better kidney health through public policy.
A list of social media accounts for your senators and representatives can be found here. It includes Twitter and Instagram handles and a link to each legislators’ Facebook page. Please be sure to use #MyKidneyVoice with any messages you send to your lawmakers.

Talking Points
Living Donor Protection Act:
This bill eliminates discrimination against living donors in the procurement of life, disability, and long-term care insurance. Insurance companies cannot drop a living donor, change their premiums, or refuse coverage based on their status as a living kidney donor.
The Improving Access to Home Dialysis Act:
This bill seeks to remove barriers to accessing home dialysis and ensure that patients who do choose home dialysis have the support they need to be successful.
Address Racial and Ethnic Disparities:
The National Kidney Foundation supports efforts to reduce the burden of kidney disease in diverse and underserved communities. Specifically, we encourage Congress to:
- Improve Chronic Kidney Disease population health in underserved communities;
- Increase public investment in kidney health equity
- Close the race and ethnicity gap in Access Living Donor Kidney Transplant
- Enhance understanding of barriers to transplant for racial and ethnic minorities
- Ensure equitable access to home dialysis success
- Extend Medigap to all ESRD beneficiaries
Twitter Tips
- Follow the National Kidney Foundation (@NKF_Advocacy and @NKF) and retweet posts that speak to you and your kidney journey.
- Whenever appropriate, tag your lawmakers in your tweets, (e.g., when you thank them for meeting with you, after you’ve emailed them about a key issue, etc.).
- The text of your tweet must be under 280 characters. New: Twitter’s character limit now excludes space for a link and/or photo, so you can add those even after the character count of your tweet has reached 280.
- Add photos and videos of your visits with lawmakers!
- Identify your hometown and mention that you’re a constituent to identify yourself as a resident in their district or state.
- Tweet at your legislator using the hashtag #MyKidneyVoice and mention one of the following statistics:
- An estimated 37 million Americans have kidney disease.
- 90% of Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease are unaware they have it.
- Medicare spends $90,000/year per kidney patient.
- More than 500,000 Americans are on dialysis.
- Approximately 100,000 Americans are waiting for a kidney transplant.
- Nearly 23,400 Americans received a kidney transplant in 2019.
- Or use a state-specific state from the fact sheets on our web site.
Facebook Tips
- Follow the National Kidney Foundation and consider sharing posts that speak to you and your kidney journey.
- Post updates, photos, and videos of you and your advocacy activities on your personal Facebook page.
- When sharing an advocacy-related post, please tag your lawmakers in the post by using the “@” symbol before typing their name (or the name of their Facebook page).
- Use the hashtag #MyKidneyVoice whenever you post about your advocacy activities.
