About the Legacy Society

The National Kidney Foundation’s Legacy Society was founded to thank and honor those who have named us in their estate plans. A legacy gift allows you to create a future that represents your values and contribute to patients with kidney disease and their loved ones.

What language do I include in my will?

Here are some examples of specific language you can include in your will:
 
To leave a specific percentage, or dollar amount of your estate:
"I give and bequeath ___% (or sum of $___) of my estate to the National Kidney Foundation, (region and address) to be used for its general purposes."
 
You may also give a particular asset ("my shares of XYZ stock…") or a portion of the residue of your estate after other bequests have been paid ("50% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate…").

How will my gift have an impact?

Depending how you would like to designate your funds, you can have an impact on local and national programs, patients, and research etc. that work directly to impact kidney health.

What if I’ve already written my will or trust?

You can amend a will or trust to make a gift without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new gift to The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) while reaffirming the other terms of your will.
 
There are many different types of trusts that can serve a variety of purposes. The advice of an attorney and qualified financial planner is necessary to assess your situation and decide which trust might best serve your goals.
