New York, NY (December 13, 2012) – For nearly 95,000 Americans, this year's holiday wish list has only one item: the gift of a life-saving new kidney. When you need a kidney, new toys and gadgets are luxuries you can't afford to think about. This holiday season, the National Kidney Foundation is honoring those who've given the greatest gift—the gift of life.
Through the National Kidney Foundation's new Organ Donor Heroes App on Facebook, fans can spotlight inspirational kidney donors by sharing stories and photos. To upload your story, visit www.facebook.com/nationalkidneyfoundation and click on the App.
"Organ donation doesn't require a credit card, cash or even a gift certificate, yet it's the one gift with enduring value," says Joseph Vassalotti, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the National Kidney Foundation. "One organ donor can save or enhance the lives of up to 25 people."
In 2011, Americans donated 16,813 kidneys. Each day, 18 people die because there are simply not enough available organs to meet the overwhelming demand. "Facebook's organ donor status feature launched earlier this year is helping start the conversation about organ donation among friends socializing online. The National Kidney Foundation's Organ Donor Heroes App is helping tell the organ donor story through real life experiences. We urge those who know donors to share their stories with the ultimate goal of inspiring more Americans to consider organ donation," continues Vassalotti.
